Choosing Ute Tool Boxes

Why use Ute Tool Boxes

Most tradesmen wouldn’t want to work without their built in Ute tool boxes. But you don’t have to be a professional to justify using these storage systems in your vehicle. The cost is minimal when you realise that the Ute storage box or ute tray tool boxes last for decades. You can clear out your passenger space in the front cab and safely keep those tools in a lockable, weatherproof metal storage box.

Choosing Ute Tool Boxes

There are several options for ute tool boxes. Two general and popular types are Chest boxes and saddle box (AKA a crossbox).

Chest Box – This is a sturdy metal box that sits firmly in place on the tray of the Ute. It is lockable, weatherproof and corrosion proof, being made of either galvanised steel, aluminium, or powdered steel. Being as wide as the width of the Ute it will bold fairly long tools, and make maximum use of the space. The disadvantage is that you cannot use the space taken up by the toolbox itself. So when you have a long item that will cover the entire area of the ute tray this toolbox will get in the way.

Saddle Box /Cross box – This has wings on the side that are actually slightly wider than the Ute tray. It sits on the side of the tray, allowing some space beneath to be kept free. This proves useful, as you can slide pipes or other long item underneath the toolbox. This design is also lockable, weatherproof and corrosion proof, being made of either galvanised steel, aluminium, or powdered steel.

What to Look For:

⦁ Weather resistant – waterproof and not damaged by sunlight.
⦁ Quality Lock
⦁ Gas Lifts, so the box opens automatically.
⦁ Easy to close, without slamming shut.
⦁ Corrosion resistant material. Paint will only stop corrosion till it comes off.
⦁ Easy access

In addition to Ute Tool Boxes we also recommend:

The tools you need to store will vary according to your trade or hobbies. So you might need different storage systems.

⦁ Ute storage box
⦁ Ute tray tool boxes
⦁ Ute drawer system
Tradesman roof racks
⦁ A portable tool box, not attached.
⦁ Floor protection
